Katy ARTreach helps victims of crime and catastrophe become survivors
How can art programs help?
Art can help a victim of crime or catastrophe deal with the crisis, manage the stress, let go of the pain, and look forward to a positive future.
Katy Christian Ministries offers a number of support services that help families and children who are victims of crimes including domestic abuse and sexual assault. Victims of hurricanes, floods or fire - Help is always available at Katy Christian Ministries Crisis Center www.ktcm.org
ARTreach supports the KCM counseling and support services through a creative art program offered to children on a weekly basis. This program is designed ignite a passion for the arts in young people and inspire hope for a positive future
ARTreach utilizes positive role models and peer mentors and seeks donations to bring in professional artists, special events and performing arts assemblies to KCM. The story tellers, artists, dancers, and musicians bring life and energy and further help the children and the families manage their crisis situation.
Learning to express your ideas in an appropriate manner and being able to communicate effectively is part of the healing process. Art becomes a tool for constructing, and reconstructing. Participating in art can stimulate a child’s own creative notions - the process is inspiring and empowering! Being able to creatively envision a positive future after surviving a crime or a catastrophe is the key to moving forward.
This semester the children can look forward to the following weekly art, music, drama and dance experiences made possible thanks to assistance funding from Young Audiences of Houston, a grant from Houston Endowment, Inc., and individual donations made to Katy ARTreach by friends of KCM.

How does an artist teach children in crisis about the importance of creating balance in their lives?
Artist Judy Malone-Stein
Judy teaches through artistic example- that for every action there is a reaction, with every choice comes a consequence, and the best lesson of all, because children at the Crisis Center are going through a very hard time in their lives right now, is the reminder that for every down there is always an up!
Learning life lessons through the art of mobile making? This engaging interactive workshop introduced science and geometry as well as basic social and life skills as only a creative artist could do it… Judy Malone-Stein teaches this workshop as an opportunity to learn about mobile making through the eyes of an artist named Alexander Calder.
